Medical Products Recalled for Bacterial Contamination

Medical product manufacturer Smith & Nephew Inc. recently recalled products that could be contaminated with potentially dangerous bacteria.  The recall includes two products made by the Triad Group Inc.—wipes used to clean the skin before applying medical tape or film and adhesive removers used to clean residue from the skin.  These products are widely used by diabetics and other patients who use injected medications.

The Triad Group Inc. of Hartland, Wisconsin, along with its sister company, H&P Industries Inc., has been cited by the FDA in the past.  As discussed in a previous blog, the FDA asked the company stop producing its products in March.  In April, U.S. Marshalls seized over $6 million in medical supplies manufactured by the twin, family-owned companies.  H&P has been cited in at least three lawsuits alleging the company’s products were responsible for serious injuries as well as one death.

Last winter, H&P recalled all of its lots of alcohol wipes due to a potential for contamination with Bacillus cereus, a bacteria that can cause serious, life-threatening infections in those who are ill or vulnerable.  Since then, the FDA has received 201 reports of problems with Triad alcohol wipes.  These problems include allegations of seven deaths, 114 infections, and 87 minor problems such as rashes.  The FDA continues to investigate the allegations, including the death of a 7-year-old boy whose death was confirmed to have been caused by Bacillus cereus.
