4.8 Million Box Fans Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Lasko Products Inc. announced that it will recall about 4.8 million box fans because of an electrical failure in the fan's motor that can pose a fire hazard.

The company has received seven reports of fires associated with motor failures including two house fires and one barn fire.  All of the fires caused extensive property damage.

The fans were sold at mass merchandisers nationwide from July 2002 through December 2005 for between $12 and $25.  Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fans.

Last month, Lasko recalled 107,500 portable electric heaters.  That recall also stemmed from an electrical problem and posed a fire hazard to consumers.
