CPSC Takes on Window Blinds Manufacturers

The Consumer Product Safety Commission wants window blind manufacturers to develop a way to eliminate the strangulation hazard posed to children by window blind cords or they could face mandatory regulations.  Although cordless blinds are available, the commission feels that is only one part of the solution and less expensive alternatives must be made available to consumers.

On average, one child per month strangles on a blind cord.  This has prompted several recalls over the years, including a recall in 2009 of 50 million Roman shades and roll-up blinds because of strangulation risks.

In response to the CPSC, manufacturers have begun working with a task force of regulators and consumer advocates to address the safety concern and have offered several fixes that they say would reduce the hazards.  However, consumer advocates on the task force say they are not satisfied stating they don’t want to reduce the hazard of a child strangling in the cords, but eliminate it.  They say they expect to come up with a solution by the fall.

Industry critics say manufacturers have done little to address safety hazards except making minor tweaks or putting the burden on parents to shorten cords or buy tie-down devices.
