Boston Scientific Recalls iCross Catheters for Heart Imaging

Medical device maker Boston Scientific Corp has recalled more than 29,000 of its iCross coronary imaging catheters.  The catheter tips can become too brittle and break off inside patients during the imaging procedure causing damage to blood vessel walls.  The catheter may also become trapped in the patient and force another procedure to retrieve it.

In some cases, the breakdown of the catheters while inside a blood vessel can cause blood clots, heart attacks, strokes and even death.

The company cited eight occurrences of catheter tip detachments between April 1, 2010 and May 10, 2011.  The catheters are used to enable doctors to get ultrasound images of blood vessels in heart patients.
