A young girl has died as a result of injuries she sustained earlier this afternoon when she fell from The Giant Wheel in Mariner’s Landing at Wildwood. The cause of the fall is still under investigation at this time. Messa & Associates extends its condolences to the family.
According to statistics listed on the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Web site, an estimated 1,086 ride related injuries occurred in 2009. Roughly six percent of those injuries required some form of overnight treatment at a hospital.
Possible amusement park ride injuries can include whiplash, neck and back injuries, heart attacks, broken bones and internal injuries. In severe cases, head, brain or spinal cord injury can occur as well as death.
The IAAPA gives the following safety tips when enjoying amusement park attractions:
- Obey listed age, height, weight, and health restrictions.
- Observe all posted ride safety rules.
- Keep hands, arms, legs and feet inside the ride at all times.
- Remain seated in the ride until it comes to a complete stop and you are instructed to exit.
- Follow instructions given by ride operators or provided by recorded announcements.
- Use safety equipment provided and do not wriggle free of or loosen restraints or other safety devices.
